Medical Laboratory Science
The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). This program is for students who are interested in pursuing a challenging and rewarding career in analytical biomedicine. The curriculum for MLS majors provides students with a sound background knowledge in the biological sciences and a quality education in specialized science theory and laboratory skills.
As part of the undergraduate program, students have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience at clinical sites such as Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. In addition, the university required courses offers the MLS student an opportunity to become more knowledgeable in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Although certification is essential for practice in clinical laboratories, students receiving a B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science are also highly sought after by biotechnology companies, biomedical research facilities, and in the fields of forensic medicine, public health, and biological and chemical industry sales, service, and education. The degree is also an excellent foundation for those students planning to go on to professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, physician’s assistant, pathologists' assistant) or graduate school in the biosciences, such as microbiology and biochemistry, or in a variety of other disciplines including Health Management and Policy, Business Administration and Education. Students may pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in MLS by following a clinical, research, or pre-professional track.
The MLS program also works closely with the Employer Relations and Recruiting Department in the Advising and Career Center here at UNH. They provide up-to-date information on job opportunities and openings in the area for our graduates.

PROFESSIONMedical laboratory science plays an essential part in modern health care. Working closely with other health professionals, medical laboratory scientists perform analyses on body fluids, interpret and evaluate data, and provide information to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disease. The field is growing, as advances are made in areas such as molecular diagnostics and forensic medicine, and new concerns about bioterrorism, have increased the demand for skilled laboratorians. UNH graduates are working as technologists, researchers, and in various other positions in the biomedical industry. Many of our graduates assume administrative and managerial positions within healthcare organizations. |
